Hacking A Terror Network (426 views)

Hacking a Terror Network uses a fictional scenario to demonstrate how terrorists could use the Internet to coordinate and launch a series of deadly attacks. While the scenario may be fictitious, the techniques and technologies that Russ Rogers uses are current and technically accurate. Novices and security professionals will benefit from reading this book and even those not involved in security may enjoy the "thriller" story.

About The Book
In Hacking a Terror Network, Russ Rogers uses the fictitious story of a man following a decade-old grudge against the West. He has adopted his father's pure hatred of America and has vowed to avenge the death of his brother.
An American agent begins to suspect an impending terrorist attack, but he has to gather enough evidence to get someone to believe him in time to do something about it.

It is against this terrorist thriller storyline that Rogers discusses various aspects of hacking, computer security, encryption and steganography.

Syngress has been publishing more of these educational information security books disguised as novels (or cyber-thriller novels disguised as educational information security books). I think they work very well for getting the information delivered in a more entertaining format.

The book also includes a CD which contains the various tools and utilities discussed in the book. You can sort of "play along" with the story or just test the tools out on your own time.

Anyone can do it!

"How to Build Your Birdhouse" is packed with information about birds and building birdhouses.

Undertaking this new hobby as a family project is a great way to interact with your children. Not only will they learn how to build the birdhouses with you, but will also be contributing to making our world a better place.

C++ Templates: The Complete Guide

Templates are among the most powerful features of C++, but they are too often neglected, misunderstood, and misused. C++ Templates: The Complete Guide provides software architects and engineers with a clear understanding of why, when, and how to use templates to build and maintain cleaner, faster, and smarter software more efficiently.

C++ Templates begins with an insightful tutorial on basic concepts and language features. The remainder of the book serves as a comprehensive reference, focusing first on language details, then on a wide range of coding techniques, and finally on advanced applications for templates. Examples used throughout the book illustrate abstract concepts and demonstrate best practices.

Readers learn

*The exact behaviors of templates
*How to avoid the pitfalls associated with templates
*Idioms and techniques, from the basic to the previously undocumented
*How to reuse source code without threatening performance or safety
*How to increase the efficiency of C++ programs
*How to produce more flexible and maintainable software

How To Develop A Perfect Memory

HOW TO DEVELOP A PERFECT MEMORY by DOMINIC O'BRIEN

When I decided to enter the World Memory Championships last year, I chose Dominic O'Brien's book "How to Develop a Perfect Memory" as my guide to developing the skills necessary to compete at that level.

It was a simple decision. My thought process at the time was that it was probably a good idea to follow in the footsteps of the World Memory Champion if I wanted to make any impact at all in competition memory. Dominic O'Brien has won the title six times and if anyone knows anything about memory it is he.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

As you would expect, the book covers a wide range of memory applications from remembering names, speeches and directions to numbers, cards and sporting trivia. But instead of just being a complete memory course, it is the sort of book that you can dip into to solve a particular memory challenge without having to plough through the whole book.

The basics of the O'Brien System are the use of mental journeys and the translation of numbers into memorable images. Once those concepts are mastered the foundations of a perfect memory are very much in place.

The book also makes for an interesting read. If you have ever wondered how people can win at Blackjack by card counting or how you can win good money on quiz machines Dominic's description of his own experiences is enlightening.

... the longest journey starts with a single step ...

If you are interested in "party trick memory" or have a specific memory problem that you would like to solve then this is probably the only book you will ever need.

If you want to sharpen up your memory skills for school, college or university then read Dominic's other book "How to Pass Exams" (to be reviewed later this year).

His system is extremely flexible and his approach is new and therefore refreshing. It does take some effort but the results are worth it.

It must work because after reading and applying the principles contained in this book alone, I came 5th in the World Memory Championships.

How to Develop a Perfect Memory by Dominic O'Brien is published by HEADLINE BOOK PUBLISHING at £5.99 and is available from all good bookshops (ISBN 0-7472-4517-7). Please note that since this review was written, there have been problems getting copies of this book. I believe that it might be out of print although one or two smaller bookstores have stocked it. If you can't get it through your local bookstore, see if they have an "Out of Print" service that could find it for you. Alternatively, try one of the many online bookstores. As a last resort, most libraries will find books for you to borrow.
